Movie criticsare completely missing the point in “Nine .” Their reviews criticize the film for being frantic, distorted, and lacking any authenticity. They disapprove of the “movie of a musical of a movie” idea; “Nine” is a fusion of Federico Fellini’s “8 ½” and its Broadway musical counterpart. But all these criticism are blatantly ironic. “Nine” is about director Guido Contini’s (Daniel Day-Lewis) desperate search for a new film idea. His previous inspirations, the women in his life, have exhausted all his creativity. The press, producer, screenwriter, actress, wife, mistress—everyone—harass Guido to come up with something, anything, for this “ITALIA” movie, but Guido finds nothing.
Rob Marshall took it in his hands to direct the movie that Guido Contini should have created. “Nine” is about stimulating, exciting, and enthralling the audience just like a circus. The kitten-like mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz) treats us to a tightrope show, while costume designer Lilli (Judi Dench) puts on a fabulous cabaret. American journalist Stephanie (Kate Hudson) struts down the runway in a go-go girl outfit and the mysterious witch Saraghina (Stacy Ferguson a.k.a Fergie) hypnotizes us with a sandy show. Marion Cotillard, as Luisa, is a sexier yet less aggressive version of “8 ½”’s Anouk Aimee. Her second solo “Take It All,” almost as impressive as any of her performances in “La Vie En Rose,” is “Nine’s” most poignant number as Luisa strips away from the illusion that she deserves Guido’s best because she is his wife.
The circus is all in Guido’s head, but he dismisses each number as fantasies with no substance. Guido holds back from revealing to his audience who he really is—a mess, a circus. He is Italia; life is Italia. Lilli reminds him that he is a “world class liar” and that he needs “to go out there and lie for Italia,” yet Guido refuses to take the chance of exposing the truth. Perhaps he is afraid of more criticism, of rejection, of failure. Since Guido can’t unveil the truth himself, “Nine” does so for him. “Nine” is “ITALIA.”
The frantic structure of “Nine” mirrors its content. Did critics misunderstand, or were they unwilling to accept that fanfare and decadence—lingerie and jingles—are everything and nothing at once? When New York Times movie critic A.O. Scott reproaches Mr. Day-Lewis’s Guido for lacking any “romantic ardor or artistic passion” and turning out to be a “jerk, compulsive liar and seeker of attention,” I laugh and ask, isn’t that who Guido is supposed to be? If we want to compare “Nine” pit-for-pat to “8 ½,” I dare say that Fellini himself couldn’t have described Guido better. Guido is that jerk that everybody can’t stand because he is nothing yet he is everything.
